Scroll down for information about Lu and her work.
Lu Grauel is an Alaskan artist whose work ranges from whimsical to serious and reflects her deep love of nature and the creatures which inhabit it. Lu has had a lifelong interest in nature and has a degree in biology from U.C.L.A. Twenty years ago, she left California for life in the slow lane in Alaska.
Lu lives in a wilderness setting in a remote bay accessible only by boat or floatplane. She spends summers cruising on a sailboat and making excursions into the forest to collect various natural materials used in some of her artwork. Winters are devoted to painting.
Besides traditional watercolor paintings, Lu specializes in painting “bear bread” a type of fungus found growing on the sides of trees throughout the Tongass National Forest. Each fungus is properly prepared prior to painting.
