Scroll down for information about Jim and his work.
Jim has established himself as a well known artist throughout Southeast Alaska. As a descendent of the Haidi nation and member of the Eagle Frog family, Jim takes pride in his native roots and this is at the heart of his journey in mastering this tribe’s unique art style.
From the time Jim was young he was fascinated with the work of Sitkan artists, Benny Benson and Kermit Olson. He recalls delivering newspapers as a boy and stopping to watch as these artist labored over their amazing works of art. At the age of 16, Jim’s artistic career was launched when his high school art teacher Pete Bibb took special interest in him and began teaching Jim the principles of formline design and basic wood carving. Jim further went on to teach himself the art of sketching, carvning and mastering wood working techniques which has enabled him to create many monumental pieces around Southeast Alaska.
Jim gives credit to Bill Reid as one of his most influential artists behind many of his pieces. Jim’s work ranges in size from small decorative piece, to large scale wall pieces and are intricate with beautifully hand crafted details. Jim’s work is widely acknowledged and has been commissioned be corporate entities such as: The Goldbelt Corporation, Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium, the State of Alaska, Shee Atika Corporation and the National Parks Service. Although born in Juneau, Jim has established himself out of Sitka and has become an artist local Sitkans take pride in.
